Planet of the Baboons

Finishing out last week’s classes went well. However, by the end of the week the other teachers in the school started to take advantage of us. At one point I was teaching an 8th grade Biology class. I am glad it happened because it was a great experience to see and teach subjects that I will never be able to teach in the states.

Finishing out last week’s classes went well. However, by the end of the week the other teachers in the school started to take advantage of us. At one point I was teaching an 8th grade Biology class. I am glad it happened because it was a great experience to see and teach subjects that I will never be able to teach in the states. On Friday, I delivered the letters from my students at Forest Hills Eastern High School to the learners at Kayamandi High School. The learners here were so pumped for the letters and spent the entire class writing letters back. One of my classes was a computer class and many of the learners here started to facebook the students back in Michigan. It was also great to see them researching things on the Internet that the kids wrote about. I even saw a few learners here checking out the Big House (I let it happen, even though I love my Spartans). The letters looked great and I am so excited to bring them back and deliver all of the letters!

After the letters we finished up our day at Kayamandi and headed straight for the Beach House in Pringle Bay. When we arrived we all were so pumped. It was directly on the ocean and we were looking out into the cape of good hope. We got there in time to see the sunset, and it was beautiful. It almost did not look real because everything around us turned pink and orange. Friday was a great day and I could not wait to wake up and have some fun on the beach.

We all did not know it but Saturday was going to be a very eventful day. The day was going fine and we were all just having fun on the beach. After awhile some of us decided to go take a nap or read at the house. I was one who decided to take a nap in the basement. I was in a nice peaceful sleep until I woke up to murdering screams! I immediately shut the door and was hiding in the room with Katie and Rob. The screaming would not stop and we thought our classmates were getting eaten and ripped apart by Baboons. I was so scared! Finally the screams stopped and we all ran upstairs. To our relief everyone was okay. What had happened was a BIG Baboon climbed into the house and started stealing our food. People were throwing things at him and he would not leave until someone hit at him with a piece of wood. We thought that this would be our only run in with the Baboons but we were wrong. Two other times they chased us into our house and surrounded us. I felt like we were being dominated and controlled by them the whole weekend!

It is now Monday night and I have been through another full day of school. My teacher decided to not show up again and he will not be here for the remaining time I am here. It sounds kind of fishy to me! I am fine with it though because I get to teach everyday now and make my own lessons! The students were great today and I am pumped for the two final weeks. Also we are to Robben Island this Saturday. This is were Nelson Mandela was locked up. So excited to see this! Anyway, I hope everyone is having fun in the states!
