We toured the Township in Stellenbosch on Saturday, March 24th. Sorry for being so late on my post! I thought that this deserved its on post because of how amazing it went. The Township is basically a shantytown in Kayamundi. If you have read my earlier posts you probably recognize the name Kayamundi. That is the high school I am teaching at! So I got to tour where many of my students live.

When we first arrived in the Township it was very shocking. The houses are basically huts made out of metal or any scarp the people there can find. However, in the background you are looking into a view of the mountains and vineyards. No words can describe the contrast between these two images. As the group began to walk through the Township, the first child saw us the ran as fast as they could toward us. Soon enough we were all receiving hugs from random children of the Township. This was happening throughout the whole tour. It was not just the children though. All of the adults and teenagers also wanted to meet us and shake our hands. It was so much fun and I do not think I have ever smiled so much in my life. And that is saying a lot. Also it was just nice to see people with absolutely nothing be so happy! It brought me down to earth.

On our way through the township we encountered an African Beer Maker. We also ran into a woman who made her own jewelry. We basically bought everything from her. She was really talented. We also got to donate a bunch of school supplies to their preschools! I cannot express enough how amazing this tour was. I will never forget the people of Kayamundi.
