Many of you may be wondering why I titled this post Molo. Molo is a Xhosa (Kho-sa) word meaning Hello. This is the language that all of my students at Kayamundi High School speak. I was very confused the first day of school because I was expecting the students to be fluent in English. This is not the case, and is why I pulled 5 students aside to teach me the basics of Xhosa. For many of you who do not know about Xhosa, it is a language that incorporates clicks into their words. It is very difficult to learn and my students are always laughing at me when I try to use the clicks. Even though they are always laughing at me, I do love them! I have learned so much from them. Not a single student takes their education for granted. They are all so intelligent. The best story of my many so far is when I brought my soccer ball to school. The students and I created a 5-on-5 soccer game at lunch time and we had a crowd watching us. It was so much fun and my team won! Overall the school has been great so far and I can’t wait to teach more.
Outside of the school my group has done so many things. So far the group has we went to a lounge called Cubano and had a great time with the Stellenbosch college students. It was a restaurant/bar and was a great atmosphere. We also have gone to Cape town on a train where we briefly looked at Table Top Mountain, the colorful houses in the Muliah District, and shopped at the market where I got some pretty cool gifts for people back home! I also got to eat out at a braii (BBQ) with my host family. I had a sausage type food called borewors and ate it like a hot dog. It was so good!
Today is my birthday so Katie took me out to lunch which was awesome. We are also celebrating tonight with everyone else. There are so many other things we have done but there is not enough time to tell the stories. Tomorrow I get to pet cheetahs and drink wine. Sounds like a pretty good combination. After that we head off to the garden route. Anyway I hope everyone is having a fun and safe time at home. Can’t wait to see everyone.
