Hello Everyone!

I have arrived in South Africa and it is beautiful here. Everywhere you look there are mountains. I also got to meet my host family, and they are awesome people. They are willing to do anything for me and my other roommates. There are also two other students living with us. Ryan who is 17 goes to high school in Stellenbosch and Nickita is just graduating from college in Stellenbosch. Ryan wants us to play rugby with him and his firends. I can’t wait to learn about that sport. He also thinks it is cooler than american football. I did not agree with that! Our host family also has two dogs, Jimma and Ratty. Ratty was saved from a shelter but he is very shy. Jimma is a retriever and just wants to cuddle all the time. I can’t stress enough how amazing my whole family has been so far.

We also got to visit the schools we are going to teach at. When we arrived at these schools the students came running up to us and started hugging everyone. It was a really good feeling. Everyone is really happy here at the schools even though they do not have much. I can’t wait until I get to teach at the high school. It is right inside a rough area called the township but the students are so intelligent and caring. Another cool aspect of the high school I am teaching at is the scenery. Mountains literally wrap around the school. It is unbelievable.

In addition to all this we had our welcome dinner. This is where all the host families got together and met each other. This was a great time and I met some very nice people. The foods were very interesting too! My favorite was a dish called curry. I don’t know wwhat was in it but it was spicy. I also encountered someone who did the Africa handshake with me. Luckily I was ready and didn’t look stupid.

It has only been a day but I have learned so much. I miss everyone back home and cant wait to tell you all stories.
